Common throughout the region. It grows in all types of forests, also on mountain heaths above the tree line.

 

Sometimes refered to living fossils, the oldest relatives of these plants existed in the Devonian period (about 420-390 m.years ago).

 

These plants do not have flowers. The cone releases spores, which grow into gametophytes.

These gametophytes produce the sperm and eggs, which fuse and ultimately grow into a mature plant.
